Anthony Paul "Tony" Merritt, 66, passed away peacefully on April 17 at LSU Hospital following an accident at his home earlier that week.

Tony was a man who never slowed down. He loved to hunt, fish, work with his hands, and stay busy every chance he got. Whether he was fixing something, helping someone, working outdoors, or spending time in the woods and on the water, he found joy in hard work and simple moments. He was the kind of man who always had a project going and never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Cody Lane Merritt; his parents, Mary and Leroy Merritt; and his former wife, Teresa Merritt.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Amber "Berbie" Hayes, and her husband, Dustin Hayes, along with their sons, Kayden, Conner, and Kason, who were the light of his life. His older brother, David Merritt. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Dayton, Brenna, and Lainie, children of his late son Cody, and their mother, Jada.

Tony was also deeply loved by Clint, Lisa, Scooter, Jesse, Joe, Jesse Hill, Kelsey, Charlie, Murice, Salena, and their children, along with many extended family members and lifelong friends who became family.

Tony was a talented piano player and loved to sing from time to time throughout his life. He worked as an electrician, but to so many he was much more than that—he was a boss, a mentor, and someone people looked up to. He taught others not only how to work hard, but how to care for people and show up when it mattered most.

He never met a stranger and had a heart big enough for everyone. His kindness, strength, humor, and willingness to help others made him unforgettable. He loved deeply, gave freely, and left behind a legacy of hard work, love, and loyalty.

His family finds peace in knowing he is now reunited with his son Cody, his parents and all the loved ones who went before him. While our hearts are broken, we are thankful for every memory, every lesson, and every moment we were blessed to have with him.

He will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.

A celebration of Tony's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026 in the chapel of Chapelwood Funeral Home.
