JoAnn Bonham Shumaker, age 95, of Wake Village, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 26, 1931, to Boyd and Fannie Lou Bonham, JoAnn lived a life centered on faith, family, and caring for those she loved.

A longtime member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, later known as Cross View Baptist Church, JoAnn's faith was an important part of her life. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her family and creating lasting memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren especially treasured the summer trips she planned for them, memories that will be cherished for generations.

Known lovingly as "Nanny," JoAnn had a special way of making those around her feel loved. She never met a stranger and always put her family first. She especially adored her "baby," Lindy Shumaker, who faithfully cared for her for many years with unwavering love and devotion.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, H. B. Shumaker; her parents, Boyd and Fannie Lou Bonham; her sister, Patsy Carroll; her son-in-law, Phillip Crews; and her cherished fur babies, Maggie, Opie, and Fuzz.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Cheryl Crews, Randy Shumaker, Debbie Parker and husband Joe, and Lindy Shumaker. She was a proud and loving Nanny to her grandchildren, Kristi Frachiseur, Brandi Bobo, and Ann Hilton; her great-grandchildren, Jacob Ragland, Jordan Ragland, Bella Harrington, Parker Harrington, Kye Bobo, Cassidy Sager, and Chandler Hilton; and her great-great-grandchildren, Brooks and Drew Ragland. She also leaves behind many other relatives and dear friends who were blessed to know and love her.

Though her family grieves her passing, they find comfort in knowing she is reunited with those who went before her and resting in the presence of her Lord. Her legacy of love, faith, kindness, and devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Retreat at Kenwood for the kindness and compassion shown to JoAnn during her final days. They are also deeply thankful for the care provided by nurse Ellen and the dedicated aides of Gentiva Hospice, whose comfort and support meant so much to both JoAnn and her family.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Dr. John Webb officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Chapelwood Funeral Home.
