Life Legacy

Jimmy Lee Shumake was born in DeKalb, TX, on September 6, 1930, to Thomas Edward and Liza Moore Shumake. Jimmy passed away on February 2, 2013, at his home surrounded by family. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Billy, one grandson, and one step-son.

Jimmy attended Texarkana Junior College for a brief time, but his work schedule would not allow him to finish. Before he began working at Cargile/Orr Chevrolet in 1961, he worked at Powell Chevrolet for 10 years in DeKalb and New Boston. For over 50 years, he was the “go-to” guy for parts at Orr Chevrolet. Jimmy served in the Texas National Guard from 1950-1990. His fellow guard members greatly enjoyed the food he prepared. He was “famous” for his specialty ham that family members and friends requested for any special gathering!

Jimmy was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church in Texarkana. He was a man of strong faith and Christian character.

Jimmy married his first “soulmate”, Agnes Bohn, in November of 1960. With that marriage, he immediately became the father of Bobby Bohn (Nell) of Texarkana, Sue Price of Texarkana, and Mary Ann Southern (Bob) of Benton, AR. In 2003, Jimmy saw Agnes’ soul set free. In November of 2007, he married his second “soulmate”, Naomi Herrington. This time, he gained 5 more children: Pat McCormick (Keith) of Texarkana, AR, Debbie Daffern (Lynn) of Maud, TX, Doug Philyaw of Texarkana, AR, Karen Morris (Scott) of Seguin, TX, and Phillip Philyaw (deceased), (Jeanie) of Fouke, AR.

Additionally, Jimmy is survived by 4 siblings, Sucky Tidwell (Leslie) of DeKalb, TX, Nolan Shumake (Polly) of Wake Village, TX, Betty Meadows (Donald) of DeKalb, TX, and Joe Shumake (Charlotte) of Wake Village, TX. “PawPaw” Jimmy will be missed by 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Jimmy enjoyed camping, traveling, and especially spending time with family and friends.

Visitation will be at Texarkana Funeral Home on Loop 245, from 6-8 P.M. Monday, February 4, 2013. The funeral service will also be at Texarkana Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, with Chris Hooten and Rev. Don Brankel officiating. Burial will be at East Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Max Shumake, Ray Shumake, Tommy Shumake, Randy Green, Brandon McCormick, Bryan Philyaw, and Troy Daffern.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Michael Hospital, and Hospice of Texarkana. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Hope Cemetery Association, 703 County Road 4311, DeKalb, TX 75559.
